This photo, taken yesterday near the public landing on Loon Lake, shows what has been a favourite eating spot for the pileated woodpecker. Notice the telltale large rectangular holes. The bird, found in most field guides, is actually quite common to this area. It is occasionally seen flying through the forest with a swooping flight and making a loud maniacal call. The pileated is a big bird, almost crow-like in size and stands from 41-48 cm in height and has a flaming red crest. Once seen, you'll never forget the bird.
