We're Stalled - And April 23 is Coming...

The seagulls came back early last week and we had record high water, which meant lots of open water at Gull Islands. For those of us who've been here for years - and that means since the days when there were lots of trees on Gull Islands - that was a strong indicator of Spring arriving! But then things suddenly changed - the water started to drop [and continues to drop] and the Islands are once again above water. And the lake is still freezing up at nights, meaning that any melting during the day is lost. And with the consistently lower temperatures during the day, combined with strong northerly winds, the ice doesn't melt during the day at some shoreline points.

And the ice looks different this year - it's still all white with no darker blotches.

For the past two years, the ice went off the lake on April 23. And close to that for other years. Whether or not we make that magical day is a bit of a mystery this year. The weatherman says that we're coming into a period of high to mid-teen days with warmer nights this coming week - that may be enough to get Loon Lake moving.

And it had better...since a Loon was heard flying overhead yesterday!
