This picture was taken with a Leica telephoto lens, no tripod, and from a slowly floating canoe....
So I guess it's pretty lucky it came out !
It's very hard to get near this youngster, and you don't really want to anyway. The mother always tries to keep herself between you and the baby. And there are two "guard loons" that stop you from going too close. The guard loons put up quite a ruckus and it's not wise to get them too worried.
The youngster's about two weeks old at this point and swimming very well on the surface. It hasn't started to go underwater yet. It's being very well looked after by the adult loons and it's surviving underwater prey such as muskies and snapping turtles [of which there are quite a few in this location].
