Looking for Food !


Now that the snow is all gone from the ground, animals are roaming looking for sources of food. We currently have at least two Pileated Woodpeckers living near us. Each spring they spend a lot of time searching old logs for tasty meals. This picture shows a hole made in an old maple that has been on the ground for about two years. And this hole as well as a similar hole on the other side of the log was made in less than three days. This is a big hole, but the Pileated Woodpecker is a big bird - standing over 15" tall !
