How frequently have you seen a Monarch butterfly in this area ? This past summer there have been quite a few and there's still the odd one hanging around - there was one in my backyard last evening . Until recently, I never thought much about the Monarch, only that they are a very colourful and beautiful butterfly that flits around the property and then flys away. My thoughts all changed last week. The picture shows a collection of Monarchs hanging upside down and it was taken without a tripod, at 8 pm, about 1/2 hour after sunset and the magnification used on the camera was 115X. So while it's far from a perfect picture it still lets you see the butterflys. What's interesting is that these butterflys are resting overnight at Point Pelee National Park on Lake Erie. And they are on their way to Mexico. Annually Monarch butterflys head south following a fixed flight path that goes over Point Pelee. Not all of them return and it may take several generations of butterflys before the great grandchild of the butterfly seen in my backyard returns to Loon Lake. It's worth spending a bit of time online or at the local library to learn the story of the Monarch!
