Around the Lake

I just got in from filling the bird feeders and it's quite cool outside - 0 degC. And there's a 60%chance of flurries tomorrow ! We've been feeding for over two weeks now and if the amount of feeding occurring is any sign , I think we're in for a real cold and snowy winter. Most of our winter birds are back - the blue jays, the white and red-breasted nuthatches, the chickadees. and the downy and the hairy woodpeckers. Looking out at the lake, there's one loon left and it spends a lot of time on our shoal feeding - it sure brings back memories of "Junior" from last year ! We hope there won't be a problem again this year....

The water got quite low but is now very slowly on the way back up.

In the bush, all of the leaves are down except for the odd oak tree. There are no chipmunks to be seen but there are some red and some black squirrels. Usually we see signs of deer when we go for walks on the logging roads but no so far. The deer population is very low, mostly because of coyotes and wolves - and you can hear the yipping and howling almost any night that you go outside and listen.

Yes, winter is definitely around the corner.....
