Around Loon Lake - November 3

While we don't have snow on the ground yet, the signs of coming winter are sure here. We're running to about -8 degC nightly and that's giving us ice along the shores of the lake and the Burnt River in the mornings. The bush ponds that you find while hiking through the woods are frozen over now. The lake water has started it's annual fall raising and the docks have had to have the ropes tightened a couple of times. All leaves are down except for the rare small oak tree. Our winter firewood for next year is all stacked now waiting for summer drying and splitting. The winter birds are all back and you see small flocks of warblers flying south as fast as they can. I guess the other type of snowbirds will be starting to migrate soon !
