Loon Lake is Talking Now

Reading the title of this post, one would think I've totally lost it all now ! Not so.
The term generally used to describe the noises that a frozen lake makes at certain times of the year is "talking". The "talking" can take the form of loud sharp "cracks" or the sound of low rumbles - like distant thunder. And it can be very loud - enough that you can't sleep at night! The noise is caused by ice cracking as it grows and as it contracts. It can be absolutely frightening, especially if you go for a walk on the lake during periods of intense cracking. The sound waves travel very well and are amplified under the ice pan. And you can feel the vibrations as you stand on the pan. Right now, the lake is talking a lot since we're getting the extreme temperature differences between the bright sunny days and the bone-chilling cold of night time. If you get a chance to visit during times of "talking" , you'll hear Loon Lake making noises you will never forget!
