First Signs of Coming Ice-Out

002

Here is the first sign of the pending ice out that will come in a few weeks. Loon Lake is rapidly being filled by the Trent-Severn Waterway, the rate of rise being over one foot in the past week. As the lake fills, the ice pan starts to float, almost imperceptively. As it floats, it starts to move around the lake. As it moves, ever so slightly, it pushes up over shoreline structures such as rocks. At night, with cold temperatures, any water on the lake perimeter freezes – slowing down the overall ice-out process, usually into mid-April.
