The Loon Rules !

In my previous posting, I said a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, I didn't have a camera handy and I couldn't get one fast enough to record what is perhaps the most fascinating of water battles ever seen by me on Loon Lake.

So I'll tell a short story...

This evening, about 6:30, two Canada geese that have been spending a lot of time together over the past few weeks were swimming silently side-by-side along the shoreline, enjoying the beautiful evening.

About fifty feet behind them a lone loon was also swimming silently along the shoreline - it too enjoying the beautiful evening.

All of a sudden, the two geese stopped and turned around - facing the loon. Then for some reason unknown to me, they both started swimming toward the loon, honking as they made their way.

The loon, started to sink like a submarine, with only it's head above the water [yes - loons can do that !].

What happened next was simple amazing - the two geese turned away from the loon and started to swim as fast as they could paddle.

Then suddenly, the loon disappeared under water ....

Within a few seconds the loon came up right between and slightly behind the two geese after covering about fifty feet. It jabbed at the rear end of one of the geese as the pair of geese took to the air in a real frenzy of splashing and honking!

So I wonder, who's the real boss on a lake named after it ?
