Our water level continues to drop but it is still much higher than it normally is for this time of year. One week ago, I talked to a lock master near Peterborough and he told me that the usage of the Trent Severn Waterway is down to 50% of what is usual for this time of year. He attributed the decline in usage to the higher costs of boating and the changes in hours of operation of the locks.
Paddling down the Burnt River to the dam yesterday, I noticed that water is indeed still being drawn from Loon Lake and that there is a moderate current through the culvert on the Gregory Lane, making paddling back a bit more of a challenge. There's a little over twelve inches of water above the rocks in the bottom of the culvert, ruling out the use of outboard motors while passing through the culvert.
This weekend is the annual Wilberforce Agricultural Fair. The fair starts off Friday evening with a spaghetti dinner at the Lloyd Watson Municipal Center followed by pony pulls, home craft exhibits, a children's dog show and pedal tractor races. Saturday starts with a pancake breakfast followed by farm animal displays, a nail driving contest, horse pulls, and live stage shows and much more.
It's only a short drive to Wilberforce and well worth the trip !
