After the Freshet - A Failure Revealed
April 2013 saw flooding on the lowlands of Loon Lake combined with multiple washouts costing property owners about $8,000 to repair. Services to the west shore of the lake were shut down for several days and some residents were stranded.
The 2014 freshet was not as troubling; the weather remained colder for longer periods, there were no significant rain events, and the control of water exercised by the Trent Severn Waterway staff was excellent.
There was limited flooding on the lowlands adjacent to the Burnt River mouth and there was no high water or ice damage. Two docks floated loose on the lake and one raft ended up entering Stump Lake.
However, there was significant damage at the site of the new Gregory Lane culvert. That damage had started in the Fall of 2013 and continued when large volumes of springtime waters began to move in 2014.
