Around Loon Lake - August 26, 2015

Recent lake water tests for e-Coli showed an abnormally high level of total coliform in certain areas of the lake. A retest of the entire lake showed that the levels of total coliform were indeed normal and the levels of actual e-Coli were quite low. It is my belief that the higher than normal levels of total coliform were caused by a heavy rainfall in the area that preceded the gathering of the samples. Good news!

Other water tests by myself that include Secchi disk recordings as well as a battery of tests that include pH, presence of nitrogen compounds, hardness, and phosphates, were all acceptable. More good news!

This years loon chick has successfully turned into a teenager. While the parents are still feeding, the bird has grown a lot - it is diving and it's feathers are changing so it looks more like a loon. We look forward to seeing flying school!

Our water levels are still high but Loon Lake is scheduled to drop another tenth of a meter by August 31.

The word "Culvert" is still a household word for some of us who live on the West Shore. While activities are underway to hopefully finalize the project of replacing the big Gregory Lane culvert; one property owner has raised flooding concerns about two smaller road culverts that were replaced as part of a road maintenance project. We hope that those concerns are soon resolved.

I sat down earlier today and started to create this year's pre-winter "To Do" list.......
