Around Loon Lake - February 18
The Barred Owl arrived last night at 5:30 and left at 7:30 under full moonlight. Once darkness came, we turned out all the lights in our home and took positions where we could watch the ground in front of the owl as it sat waiting for dinner.
Dinner was to be mice who regularly arrive to feed on the spilled seeds under our bird feeders. But the mice didn't cooperate and the owl went to eat elsewhere.
The Barred owl is about 50 cm tall with a wingspread just over 1 meter. It feeds mostly on mice, voles, squirrels, amphibians and small birds. They are fairly common in this area and you can sometimes hear them early in the Spring evenings saying "Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?"
Truly a beautiful bird and we were so lucky to have been able to watch it!
Around Loon Lake.
The Loon Lake road is plowed and sanded to the turn around location. The Gregory Lane is plowed from the highway to the end of Moccasin Trail. Beyond Moccasin Trail the Gregory Lane has snow with ruts. The Gregory Lane parking lot is well plowed.
There is 31 cm of snow in the bush and the lake ice has a thickness of 41 cm.
