Here's a picture of the ice pan along the West shore, taken late afternoon. The ice is now made up of vertical crystals about 5 cm long and loosely held together. As the ice moves , the pan fractures and forms mini-pans. The mini-pans rub against each other, forming the unique pattern you see in the photo. If there is a wind, some of the ice comes to shore and builds up in piles of crystals. With no wind, the ice can melt or sink. This year is a bit unusual in that there has been no rain and no wind to help the ice. Only warm sunny days. The next couple of days will be interesting !
