As Summer Approaches....

It is quite different from a week ago. The trees have greened-up to the point that you can no longer see your neighbours cottage. The lake hosted it's first swimmer to-day - albeit only a short dip followed by the word "refreshing" - and yelled quite loud. Most of the winter birds are deep in the bush now busy starting to nest. We have a few bluejays that come by in the morning for a handful of peanuts, followed by the crow who tries to get the peanuts from the jays. There's a couple of nuthatches after sunflower seeds and the hairy woodpecker who stops by to check on the whereabouts of the suet feeder.

And there's two pine squirrels - who we believe are sisters and each about to give birth to young !

The blackflies right now are about the worst I've seen in decades. Very bad swarming and biting . Repellants do little to help protect you and although you can "suit-up" in bug jackets and nets, I believe the best defense is to stay indoors. Blackflies are only out in the day, waking up at about 9:00am and going to bed at dusk. They are just starting to be replaced by mosquitos.

A bit different bug season this year ! The blackflies normally last a couple of weeks - I wonder if this year will be different ?
