Our winter birds are stating to return to introduce their young to a source of winter food. The adults arrive first and start demanding our attention. Once we acknowledge them and give them some of the food they prefer in the winter, they keep repating visits by themselves for a few days. Then they bring their young and introduce them to us and to their favouite food. So far this summer, we've had the chickadees, the crows, the white-breasted nuthatch, and the hairy woodpeckers. These two photos, slightly unfocused because they were taken through glass, show the mother hairy woodpecker [on the right] bringing her young [but larger than her] to a porch post and then feeding the "little" one with pieces of shelled and unsalted peanuts that she has pre-crushed in her beak.
