Winter Happenings....


At minus 25 deg C, it's hard to get a good night's sleep! No - it's not because it's cold in the house, but because it's so cold outside. The timbers and beams in the house all start moving ever so slightly - making loud cracking and groaning noises. It can happen above you or right in the wall beside your bed. And the trees outside make loud cracking noises that can really scare you if you're not prepared for them. The noises not only occur during the night, but happen again as the sun hits the outside wall early in the morning, causing the wood in the wall to expand.


Notice the early morning "rainbow" in this picture ! And it hasn't even been raining. This is caused by ice particles in the air - which are really frozen water droplets that would cause a rainbow in the summer. Another oddity of very cold weather,
