Occasionally during the summer months, we notice eagles soaring high above the lake. And there have been sightings of eagles in Haliburton County [we've seen two on perches in tree tops]. Needless to say, when we see a large nest such as this one, we're really interested in finding out who the "owner" is. While observing a bird in the vicinity of or on a nest is the best way to identify the bird, you can sometimes tell by the design characteristics of the nest who built it! This particular nest is on a high hill adjacent to the lake and is just under the tree canopy. It is made from interwoven branches up to one inch thick and has some coniferous decorating branches. The nest is between two and three feet in diameter. We believe it belongs to a large hawk [and there are some in the area] but we'll have to wait a few weeks to find out for sure!
