It looks like Loon Lake doesn't have any youngsters this year ! While there have been at least two pairs on the lake and several single loons, there was no sign of nesting activity on the lake this past spring. The traditional spots where they have nested were checked several times and we did quite a few searches for signs of new nests - all to no avail. And we've not seen any loons with chicks on the lake. We believe the cause is probably because high water was maintained much longer than normal this year, extending well past the nesting periods.
This picture shows a damaged floating loon nest. It was used for several years and we repaired it last year by weaving in a basket-like bottom. The bottom was made of naturally found driftwood slivers reinforced with driftwood sticks. If you look carefully at the picture, you can see the remains of the repair. However, the nest was not able to withstand the high water this year combined with the battering effects caused by the wind.
