An Interesting Problem on Loon Lake

During this summer's months, we have had a small flock of Comorants living on Loon Lake. At the start of the summer, there were only two birds. Now, as we near the end of summer, there are five birds. They can be seen in the daytime, usually anywhere on the lake, but primarily around and on Gull Islands. In the evening, they perch on a large, somewhat sparse pine tree located on the northerly end of Archer island. This year, they have not nested on the lake, but it's very possible they could return next year. Here's a link to an Environment Canada webpage where you can learn a lot more about these birds:

If you have travelled on Georgian Bay or along the St.Lawrence River, you can get an appreciation of just how much damage these birds can do when they decide to take up home in a given area. And they do eat a lot of fish - competition for the loons.

And we noticed that there were periods this past summer, where there were no loons to be seen anywhere on the lake nor to be heard at night. We can't help wonder if this was somehow connected to the arrival of the comorants on the lake.

Time will tell what will happen.
