Walleye are Coming Back !

Once in a while you hear some good news about fishing. And "true" news ! This summer has seen the catching of several large walleye [in the 8 pound class]. There are also a lot of walleye in the eight to thirteen inch size - youngsters - being caught. And that's real good news, since it means the fish are actively reproducing and continuing to grow. These youngsters are all being caught in the traditional areas around shoals, dropoffs, and weedbeds where "pickeral weed" grows. Fishing luck is probably at it's highest now, with the water temperature around 74 degF and the water fairly clear with minimal algae growth. And while worms and minnows have always been good bait choices, artificial deep diving lures are working well. The key to real success is also to practice "catch and release", letting the youngsters grow to become larger fish.
