The First Day of Winter - Around Loon Lake

Today is the first day of winter and we have it pretty good compared to the rest of the Province. There's about 4 inches of snow on the ground and the snow that came a few days ago stuck to the trees and has stayed. Our road has been plowed already and the provincial highways are kept in excellent condition too! It looks like the loons have all left and there's a lot of the big northern ducks stopping by on their flight south. The winter birds are all here and busy feeding. During the night we had a fox beside the house that was looking for mice that get attracted to spilled seed from the birdfeeders. There are deer in the area that are busy eating ground hemlock. Loon Lake hasn't frozen yet but there has been some freezing around the shoreline. Once the daily winds pick up, those small ice pans break away from shore and can be seen floating out on the lake. A large portion of the east side of the lake froze yesterday but waves broke up the ice. This picture shows both the snow that is stuck to the trees as well as a small flotilla of northern ducks off our shoal. These are "divers" that come onto the shoal to eat small fish.
