The Harsh Reality of Nature at Loon Lake

There are times when the reality of Mother Nature jumps up right in front of you and you quickly realize that there is a different world than we are used to at Loon Lake. This morning, at about 6:00, a deer was taken down by three wolves on the lake. The deer was a young buck that had just lost it's antlers. Standing on the ice and looking at the remains of the buck, and feeling it's body temperature still warm, with blood not frozen, you quickly realize it died a terrible death, as the wolves pursued it and brought it to the ice. Looking at the pictures, you notice that the wolves took chunks of meat from it's body and actually severed [almost surgically] it's front leg. The leg was carried away for later eating. Using my glove and my glasses as a comparison, you can see the size of the wolves paws - not small animals at all.
