On The Ice

Yesterday saw a lot of activity on the ice! Not only were snowmobiles and ATV's speeding across the lake all day, but there are three small ice rinks and two fish huts on the lake [one is ours]. The ice thickness about 100 feet from shore, just off our shoal is 5 1/2 inches whereas the ice thickness where we have our fish hut [just off First Point in 25 feet of water] is 10 inches. And the ice is blue ice, which is much stronger than white ice. While this is good news, it by no means indicates that the ice is safe to travel on everywhere on the lake - you must be watchful and careful - particularly around shoals, points, and river mouths. There can also be holes and cracks in the ice! And we do have some slushy areas. The ice still has more freezing to do before it reaches it's normal three foot thickness !
