As Springtime slowly approaches, the ice thickness on the lake and snow depth in the bush both continue to diminish. The snow in the bush is 18" deep and the ice thickness has reduced down to about 12 inches. There's a lot of surface water on the lake that is slush during the day but freezes over at nighttime. Ice travel is not good. The snow in the bush is wet crystalline and very difficult to walk through.
If a hole is drilled through the ice right now, the result is that the hole behaves like a large drain and all of the surface water around the hole swirls down through the hole into the water below. This means that the ice pan is actually sitting above the water with a space between. Because of that air gap, the ice still continues to crack, and Loon Lake continues to "talk"!
