Around Loon Lake

The ice continues to disappear - it's now out about 7 feet in most places around the shoreline. Last weekend, the pan was about 8 inches thick, so it'll take a while to go. Roads are partially drivable around the lake with some wetness left from frost coming out of the roads: Loon Lake road is open to the Government landing; Gregory Lane is open to it's end, while Trillium Trail is still not drivable. The lake water level is quite high - the culvert on highway 118 is full and the culvert on Gregory Lane has a little space left; the water is within 6 inches of cresting the Sunrise wall at the mouth of the Burnt River and Sunrise itself is not flooded. There is a lot of water entering the lake from Paynes creek on the Loon Lake Road and from Wenona Creek at Trappers Trail. There is not much water coming in from Long/Miskwabi since the dam's been closed for a couple of weeks. Provincial Highways in the area are excellent. The bush has from 4 to 6 inches of snow in spots and most south facing slopes have been bare for a while - there are leeks about 4 inches long growing in the bush. Conditions change rapidly at this time of year and some warm sunny days or a day of rainfall can cause a dramatic change. Overnight can even show a major change. But - Spring is here !
