To-day is June 19 and there are definite signs that summer is just about here. Winter birds are having their young and a new chickadee family arrived here the other day. Young ducks and geese have been borne. We we haven’t seen any sign of young loons although last week we found an abandoned loon’s egg in one of the traditional nests. The nest was in pretty bad repair but it was still high and dry. The snapping turtles are laying their eggs. We have three young red squirrels with one very tired mother and there are lots of young chipmunks in the bush.
We note that more cottager’s are starting to return, many of them bringing big new ski boats with them.
While Bass season isn’t yet open, the fishing has been quite good with some very nice walleye being caught (and released). The lake trout have moved from their winter resting area to the deeper and colder water’s of the lake. Smaller fish are on their shoreline nests.
The flies, as usual, are terrible. This year, there has been a hatch of huge house flies that are very bothersome, crawl all over you, and give a very nasty bite. There is still the odd blackfly but there are lots of aggressive mosquitos. Covering up; applying lots of bug repellent; wearing bug nets and gloves are the order of the day.
I think I’ll take the day off………
