Each day there are dozens of warblers and other smaller birds gathering and heading south. Most of our winter birds are back – the White-Breasted Nuthatch; the Chickadee; the Hairy Woodpecker; and the Blue-Jay, Still to come, as a regular visitor to our feeders is the Downy Woodpecker. There are other birds that will arrive, but these are “the regulars”. While I don’t put the feeders out until after Thanksgiving weekend, I may do so earlier this year. The Blue Jays are arriving before sunrise wanting to be fed. In fact, they are getting here so early that I put on the porch lights for them to see the peanuts.
After feeding the birds this morning, and eating my own breakfast, I was busy spreading some gravel on the driveway, when at 9:20 AM, in the midst of 5 degC temperatures and strong North-East winds, there was a short swirl of snow around me. Yes – you read it right - the “S” word. Thankfully it didn’t last long and nothing stayed on the ground.
What a change from the 29 degC and high humidity of just one week ago !
