Visit Stump Lake

Stump Lake is one of those places around Loon Lake that just has to be visited. You access Stump Lake at the mouth of the Burnt River at the North-West corner of Loon Lake. Follow the river and pass through the culvert on the Gregory Lane. Before you reach the culvert, you will pass  "Shanty Creek" where waters from Long and Miskwabi Lakes mix with Loon Lake waters. You can travel as far as the Trent Severn Waterway dam but if you want to go further down the river toward Blue Hawk Lake, you must portage at the dam. You can travel about one kilometre downstream past the dam before you reach a large beaver dam. Travel beyond the beaver dam is by portage and very difficult since the river is narrow, rocky, and with rapids. And the portage trail has never really been maintained.

Stump Lake is home to many birds, turtles, and fishes. It is part of the rich history of logging in this area as it was a route for loggers to take their logs to Lochlin. There used to be a wooden dam owned by the Hay Lumber Company near the site of the Gregory Lane culvert. And horses are known to have gone through the ice during the winter and perished.

While exploring Stump Lake, see if you can find the beams from the original Gregory Lane bridge or the rusty remains of an old GM car that went off the highway when the highway was just two dirt ruts! And below the dam, on the river bottom, there are large notched timbers from the bridge that once crossed the river just below the dam. That bridge was originally for providing access for mining exploration on the lands west of Loon Lake.

Take your time and enjoy Stump Lake!
