On Schedule

For the past few days, there’s been so much boating activity on the lake that the loons have been “laying low” in front of our boathouse. They would venture out onto our shoal every once in a while to fish and then they’d come back in closer to shore. They would just “anchor” themselves in one spot and not move. Every once in a while, you’d catch them napping – with their bills tucked under their wings. Late yesterday, I happened to sit down to watch them (they were about twenty feet away) when I noticed both loons had gray spots all over their faces. They looked like they were in a moulting phase but it wasn’t so – they are just starting to get their fall grey colour! Each year they turn grey and lose their beautiful necklace and colouration before they fly down south or to the east coast for the winter!
