Around Loon Lake - April 19 - Water Levels Down For Now !
Late in the day on April 16, the Trent Severn Waterway pulled one log from the Loon Lake dam. It's taken a couple of days, but the water level on the lake has dropped considerably.
The above graph from the level recorder mounted on the dam displays the dramatic water level drop of about 0.4 m.
The results are evident, not only where I live, but at Sunrise and in the Burnt River.
Here's some photos taken on the Burnt River early this morning. The pictures show the lower water levels; the surfacing of the mid-causeway sandbar; the fast water still going through the Gregory Lane culvert; and the new deposits of sand in the river from the cutting of the banks opposite that culvert.

The lowering of the lake water level should help prevent bad flooding as the Spring freshet continues. There is rain and warmer weather in the forecast; there is still a lot of snow still in the bush and ice on the lake; and there's a lot of water from creeks around the lake and from our upstream neighbors - Miskwabi and Long Lakes.
Let's keep our fingers crossed...
But soon the Trent Severn Waterway will be placing logs to get ready for the summer season.
