A Sinister Flower ?

If you're lucky enough to be out wandering Loon Lake's woods this coming weekend, you may come across Indian Pipes. They're also known as Corpse Plants or Ghost Flowers because of their deathly white appearance. They grow and bloom on the forest floor in light starved conditions, without leaves to capture sunlight and they have no chlorophyll to manufacture food. Their secret to success is that they are a parasite, living off a fungus in the soil. The fungus, in turn, draws it's nourishment from the roots of nearby trees.

The flower's strange mode of existence in clusters resembles groups of bewitching ghosts huddled on the forest floor. When the plant matures, it looks toward the forest canopy and turns black.

Spooky !
