While Loon Lake froze over a little over a week ago, it has since been exposed to mild weather, causing it to thaw in the middle of the lake. And that thawed portion has partially refrozen but with very thin ice and some open water.
People who live up her generally don't consider the lakes to be safe for travel until much later in the winter, when the ice is thicker.
Loon Lake is not safe for travel yet, and it is very wise to stay off the ice. Thin ice can occur anywhere!
The roads around the lake are generally clear of snow, with some icy patches. And there is virtually no snow in the bush.
Highways in the area are excellent.
