Around Loon Lake - January 21

We've been having really cold nights and cold days with bone chilling winds. Despite this cold weather, there are still slush patches on the lake. There's about eight inches of snow on the lake but the insulating quality of snow helps to keep the slush!

Walking on the lake is difficult since you keep breaking through the crust of snow.

Believe it or not, the Burnt River isn't completely frozen and there a Black ducks still hanging out on the river.

There are five fish huts on the lake but I have no idea if fishing is good yet.

While the highway maintenance has been receiving bad press recently, we find the roads to be in good condition for our travels to and from town. And the roads around the lake are in excellent winter condition.

Snow in the bush is about eight inches deep and roof snow is about the same; except for north facing roofs; where it accumulates.

We noticed last week that the lake water had a particularly strong musty odour....something not seen recently. A general whole house water filter operating at five microns nominal is not enough to correct the problem and filtering at two microns nominal is needed before you can drink the water.

The situation has started to improve.

The cause is believed to be winter algae die off as a result of the reduction in oxygen caused by ice over. The stopping of photosynthesis because of snow cover also contributes to the problem. We hope the odour continues to disappear.

Ground hog day isn't far off!
