Freshet Update Friday April 24

The freshet continued throughout this week. Most of the snow is gone and Loon Lake's ice has disappeared except for a trace remaining in a bay at the east end of the lake. This year we had multiple rainfall events that produced a total of 60 mm of water.

The resulting effect of the warmer temperatures, the rainfall, and the disappearance of snow resulted in traditional freshet water levels on the lake and in the river.

There was no flooding as occurred in previous years. Sunrise did not flood, the box culvert on Highway 118 remained above water, and the lowlands surrounding the Burnt River mouth did not flood. There were no river blockages.

The small culvert on the Loon Lake road that washed out was the only known local road problem. There were no major issues reported throughout the entire area.

While the Trent Severn Waterway staff remain vigilant, this year's freshet is considered finished. And with the exception of Kennisis Lake, all of the reservoir lakes in the area are full.
