The 2015 Freshet Begins

Yesterday the Trent Severn Waterway Tweeted that this year's Spring freshet has started.

The water levels in Loon Lake and the Burnt River are very slowly starting to rise. The lake is "grumbling" a lot and water is spilling over the ice pan at the edges. The sandbars in the Burnt River that were visible a few days ago are now submerged. Gull Islands remains well above the ice.

While we have no control over what Mother Nature does, we know that the ice on the lake is still about one half meter thick and it will be a while before it melts. And there is still a lot of snow in the bush to disappear.

The ice traditionally goes off Loon Lake about April 23. I would not be surprised if the "ice out" date this year is a bit later in the season!
