The top picture shows Pine Siskins busy having a breakfast of Nyjer (thistle) seeds. These little birds are finches, that while fairly common, are nomadic and difficult to find. We have seen and reported only one Pine Siskin in the past ten years. This group arrived with a flock of Goldfinches last weekend and have since been enjoying Loon Lake.
The bottom picture shows pollen on the lake this morning. Warnings have been issued that this year's allergy season is supposed to be very bad and that people should take precautions. If travelling north this weekend, make sure you have any necessary allergy medications!
And if allergies aren't enough, we have our yearly clouds of starving bugs. Mosquitoes aren't out yet but the black flies certainly are. They are swarming and biting. If outside, wear a good bug repellent, protective clothing, and try to stay in windy locations. The bugs are a part of our cottage country and they will soon pass.
Have a great holiday weekend!
