Early Evening Rescue

At 8:30 last evening we saw a commotion on the lake, with a lot of splashing followed by a total calm. Wings and then nothing!

A real mystery.

Grabbing a fishing net we went out in the boat, found, and lifted this beautiful Polyphemus Moth from the water - saving it from drowning or being a meal for a hungry fish!

The top picture shows the moth, sort of dripping wet! The bottom picture, from Wikipedia, shows what the moth would look like when dried out. And this morning, when he flew away, he looked like the bottom picture!

The moth we "rescued" was about 8 cm across it's wing tips, about one half of it's adult size.

How fortunate both we and the moth were!
