Around Loon Lake June 17, 2015

As we approach Summer 2015, our lake water levels are staying consistently just above average for this time of year. While that may be fine for the new families of geese and mergansers, it certainly isn't for the loons. As of today, there is no evidence of loons nesting anywhere on the lake.

While Loon Lake has had loons nesting in the past, that's really been a miracle because the lake doesn't have good nesting locations and it also has changing water levels. There have been no chicks for several years, and it looks like the trend may continue.

Our winter birds are all in the bush, but one or two will visit every few days. Soon they will bring their youngsters to show them where food is offered in the winter.

During the summer, we're busy feeding hummingbirds.

On the bug front, the mosquitos are quite bad, especially if you get back in the bush or where there's no breeze. There are no black flies and there is the occasional horsefly or deerfly.

There are lots of dragonflies and the dock spiders have their newborn.

There seems to be quite a few frogs. But no turtles have been seen.

The lake has been quiet with very few people visiting on weekends and even less during the week.

We had another visit from a bear last week, but it did no damage.
