Found - This Year's Loon Nest

We are happy to have a baby loon on the lake this year and that it's surviving predation.

Since our previous posting, we had heard rumours about a loon chick being sighted on the lake. Knowing that the "traditional" nesting areas of recent years had no nests, we decided to search areas that loons had used decades ago to try to find one.

And we were successful!

Unfortunately, one of the two eggs laid this year did not hatch. The top picture shows the unhatched egg floating near the nest; the middle picture shows the loon's nest; and the bottom picture shows a path that the loons used to get to and from the nest.

One explanation for the unhatched egg is that it may simply have been been knocked from the very shallow nest during loon movement.

Here's a link to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's "All About Birds" website where you can learn more about loons:

Enjoy!

My parents bought the Neimi cottage in the 60's and had it for almost 30 years. I would quite often find the loons nesting in that bay on the south side of Archer Island.
