Around Loon Lake - February 10, 2016 (Family Day Weekend)

This is a Whiskey Jack, or Gray Jay as it's more commonly known. This one is in Algonquin Park, but we've seen them in Newfoundland, British Columbia, and the Yukon. If you look closely at it's left leg, you will see identifying bands. Many of the birds in Algonquin Park have been banded and are part of a decades old study done by retired naturalist Dan Strickland. The Grey Jay is one of several birds nominated for Canada's National bird and it certainly got our vote!

Getting back to Loon Lake, we have just under a foot of snow on the ground. The lake remains frozen, but since we saw a snowmobile tip over this week, we urge caution when travelling on the ice. And while ice thickness on area lakes is reported at about one foot, we have water at the edge of the ice pan in front of our place.

Roads in the area remain good with ice patches on the Gregory Lane. There is some ice on the ground and slip-on ice grippers are a good idea to prevent falling.

Enjoy the weekend!
