Around Loon Lake - February 4, 2016

This is "Hairy" - a Hairy Woodpecker who has suet stuck all over his beak! He's one of five Hairys that we have this year. We also have several other species - Black-Capped Chickadee, Blue Jay, Downy Woodpecker, White Breasted Nuthatch, Red Breasted Nuthatch, American Tree Sparrow, Purple Finch, and Gold Finch. We also have a Pileated Woodpecker and a Two Bald Eagles in the neighbourhood.

Needless to say, it's a real busy winter feeding our birds. And we feed up to three flying squirrels at night!

The ice storm that we had on Tuesday night didn't curb anyone's appetites, but it did make a real skating rink of the roads. Last night we had some sticky snow that made for better driving today.

The Gregory Lane is good for travel with some icing left on the causeway and the culvert deck. The Loon Lake road, being Municipal, is well sanded to it's turn around spot. Highways in the area are clear.

I'm not sure about the lake ice thickness, but ATV's and Snowmobiles are venturing out.

Snow in the bush is about 20cm (8 inches) and there is no appreciable snow on roofs.

With Groundhog Day past us, Spring is getting closer...
