This year, I will be continuing my regular water testing for not only water clarity but for a wide range of chemicals; including those that may have found their way into Loon Lake from not only septic tank or tile bed leakage, but from a range of household products.
My first set of testing was done before the recent long holiday weekend. The results were good.
After the summer season has passed, I will be doing a dissolved oxygen and temperature profile in the lake with equipment owned by the Ministry of the Environment. I am also plan on doing the same test again after the ice goes out in 2017. A comparison between the two sets of data will show the reduction in dissolved oxygen that occurs over the winter months when the ice covers the lake. The results of my testing will be given to the Ministry of the Environment and to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. The data will also be useful in fisheries studies.
Even though our lake now has spiny water fleas, I will be continuing my sampling to monitor their rate of growth in the lake. While I doubt if they will ever disappear, I do know that they are a favourite food of lake trout. And I do know that over 50000 lake trout put into the lake by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry since they started their program.
