Have you paddled Stump Lake yet? If not, you had better do it soon because the water levels are really dropping!
We went to the dam on the weekend and there was a lot more wildlife than would have been seen out on the lake.
Tally - wise, we saw two Great Blue Herons, one Osprey, two Loons (no chicks), and one young Muskie about two feet long who was busy cruising the shoreline looking for food. And while we didn’t see the Bank Beaver, we floated beside it’s lodge listening to it talking.
When you are in the bay at the West end of Stump Lake, you really have to watch out for the mud humps that can appear from nowhere beneath your canoe. These nuisances can cause you to run aground and have quite a fun time getting floating again. The humps of course are always present, but are particularly troublesome as our water levels drop.
There are also a few stumps just below the water that can cause problems if you’re not careful. Good Polarized glasses for the bow paddler can be a real help in spotting stumps.
So if you haven’t gone down to the dam, do it soon - and you’ll be glad you did!
