
Here's another regular nightime visitor near our birdfeeders. This is a Saw-Whet owl, not uncommon but rarely seen. It's only about 18cm (7") high. It feeds mainly on mice, voles, moles and large insects. It sits on a branch and waits for the prey to come along, then it swoops out of the tree, catching it. This picture was taken about 9pm last night. At 3am, the Saw-Whet was still perched in the tree. At 6am, the owl was gone, leaving behind evidence in the snow that it had caught it's dinner.
