We hadn't seen the loon chick for almost two weeks and were having concerns about it's survival until this morning. We found it with it's mother and barely recognized it because it is now the size of a duck ! It's grown to about 2/3 the size of an adult loon and is still coloured brown with darker brown head feathers. Last time we saw the chick, it was still floating and looking down into the water. To-day it's diving - looking for food in the weedbeds.
Great to see !
On a different note, we found a loon nest with two unhatched eggs this past week.
The mother loon is still actively on the nest and is very protective if the area of the nest is approached.
We will keep watching from a distance with our fingers crossed...
