Algae in Loon Lake

This summer, clouds of algae have been seen in different locations in the lake. While commonly seen in the river flowing from the lake, algae has been noticed in shallow and warmer waters at a few locations around the shorelines. These locations are usually in bays where water from the surrounding lands enters the lake. And we have had a lot of rain this summer that washes soil nutrients into the lake, contributing to algae formation. The Ontario Ministry of the Environment has been receiving a higher than normal number of enquiries about more amounts of algae seen on lakes participating in the Lake Partner Program and the MOE believes that the cause is probably because of this years increased seasonal precipitation. The MOE suggests the best plan of action for now is to continue monitoring the algae levels. Here is a link to an excellent publication from the MOE that will give you a good insight into algae. On a good note, I've noticed that algae blooms tend not to stay from year to year!
