Loon Lake Water Quality

Our water quality is very important to us. There are basically two components to water quality - pollutant levels and clarity. They both share some common factors. The LLPOA's Water Committee tests regularly for the pollutant component and I test throughout the year for the clarity component.

The clarity component generally relates to the capability of the lake to support nutrients to grow algae and to support fish populations. It also addresses phosphorus levels, which can indicate a pollution problem.

Water quality is a complicated topic and the best way to learn more about it is from the experts at the Ontario Ministry of the Environment's Lake Partner website at:

www.ene.gov.on.ca/envision/water/lake_partner/index.htm

At the website you can also learn about how the sampling and testing of water is done and you can see the results of Loon Lake testing in pdf files. Browse to find our lake site - it's # 2808.

After finding the results, you can also learn how to interpret them.

While I'm not finished with this years testing, the Secchi results seem consistent with other years. The total results for both Secchi and Phosphorus levels are usually posted on the MOE website in April of the following year.

Check them out in the Spring !
