This year, there were two loon families, each with a newborn chick, on Loon Lake. Yesterday we visited each family to observe the youngsters.
The chick born earlier is barely distinguishable from an adult loon. And it can be occasionally be found by itself. Although it's parents have been trying to teach it to fly, we haven't seen it airborn yet!
The chick born late in the season is still under the eyeful watch of it's parents. It is now diving and searching for fish. And it is quite a bit larger than when we last saw it.
Both youngsters seem to be progressing well but we do have some concern about the late season bird. It must develop so it can fly before ice-up.
We keep watching and remain hopeful.
